The 1st international symposium on fish endocrinology (isfe) was organized in 1988 by professor Richard (dick) e. Peter and Peter k. Pang in Edmonton, Canada. The rationale for having this conference was that a series of symposia dedicated to fish reproduction, the international symposium of reproductive physiology of fish already existed, but fish physiological functions other than reproduction were not covered. Thus, dick peter and peter Pang, interested in growth hormone and prolactin, respectively, decided to create a platform where all aspects of fish endocrinology would be discussed.

An international committee was formed at the time of the 1st ISFE. This committee was notably in charge of identifying the organizers of the next meeting and discussing the scientific program. However, this all remained informal
